Hoi An Ancient Town – Lanterns on the Hoai River

About 30 km from Da Nang City, around 45 minutes by bus or taxi, Hoi An Ancient Town rests along the gentle Hoai River — a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site since 1999 and one of the best-preserved traditional trading ports in Asia. From Sea Garden Hotel & Apartment in Son Tra, it makes an easy day trip, best paired with a quiet evening back at the hotel’s 4th-floor pool.

Highlights

  • Japanese Covered Bridge (Chua Cau) – More than 400 years old, built in the early 17th century with contributions from Japanese merchants, enshrining Bac De Tran Vu; its image appears on Vietnam’s 20,000 VND banknote.
  • Old houses and assembly halls – Tan Ky, Quan Thang and Duc An old houses, and the Fujian, Chaozhou and Cantonese assembly halls, recall the town’s 16th–18th century life as an international trading port.
  • Full Moon Lantern Festival – On the 14th day of the lunar month since 1998, electric lights go off and floating lanterns drift on the Hoai River.
  • Craft villages and cuisine – Thanh Ha Pottery, Kim Bong Carpentry and lantern-making villages; cao lau, White Rose dumplings, wontons, mi Quang, chicken rice and the famous Banh Mi Phuong.
  • Evenings on the river – Sunset boat rides on the Hoai River (about 30 minutes), the Nguyen Hoang Night Market near the Japanese Covered Bridge, and express tailoring in about 350 shops.
