In a secluded valley in My Son Village, Thu Bon Commune, Da Nang City, My Son Sanctuary is a complex of ancient Cham temples — more than 70 temple structures built from the 4th to the 13th century — and a priceless museum of Cham architecture and sculpture. From Sea Garden Hotel & Apartment in Son Tra, it is a rewarding day trip into the heart of the ancient Champa Kingdom, with the hotel’s 4th-floor pool waiting when you return.
Highlights
- The holy capital – Established in the 4th century during King Bhadravarman, My Son was the holy capital and religious and spiritual centre of the ancient Champa Kingdom, west of the capital Simhapura (Tra Kieu) and near Hoi An.
- Temples to Shiva – The temples are primarily dedicated to Shiva, represented as linga, arranged in clusters with a main temple (Kalan) at the centre, a gateway tower (Gopura) and a long hall (Mandapa), with main entrances facing east.
- A sacred landscape – Sacred Mahaparvata Mountain (approximately 730 metres) rises south of the valley, likened to Shiva’s linga, with the valley as yoni and a sacred stream — Mahadani, goddess Ganga — flowing into the Thu Bon River.
- World heritage – Scholars compare My Son with Angkor Wat, Bagan and Borobudur, and it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List on December 4, 1999.
Good to know: Per the My Son Sanctuary Management Board as stated by the portal, tickets are 150,000 VND for international visitors and 100,000 VND for Vietnamese visitors per person per entry, including sightseeing and service fees.
